Supporting local businesses is something that is near and dear to my heart.  Since working at a smaller, locally owned business I have personally had the pleasure of meeting many local business owners and have enjoyed learning what it takes for a small business to thrive.  What is boils down to is community support.  I love that there is a community of locally owned shops, restaurants, and other businesses that are wiling to all support and promote one another.  I have also found that so many of these businesses love giving back to the community as well, and that is really what this season is all about, giving back.

Here at Reforming Indy we have come up with a list of our staff’s favorite places to shop, eat, and drink. This is by no means the extent of what is out there, so take our recommendations but also get out there and go explore for yourselves!

If you have spent more than ten minutes with me this last year, you have heard me singing the praises of my favorite local place to shop.  Lily & Sparrow Boutique, located in Fishers off of 116th and Maple, is my favorite hidden gem.  They carry women’s clothing, jewelry, and accessories.  I also love that they carry 31 Bits Jewelry, a company that is committed to empowering women in Uganda to rise above poverty (read more about their company at 31bits.com).  Their inventory is impressive for a smaller store and you are sure to find something there for any of the women on your holiday shopping list.  The owners, Steph and Jen Miller, are a charming duo of sisters who put their heart and soul into the store.  I can’t praise these amazing women enough for their positive store environment and providing a shopping experience that is truly exceptional.  Whether you are looking for a cute sweater for your best friend or a party dress for yourself, you are sure to find something at this amazing boutique.

If you have been living in Indy and haven’t heard of Silver in The City, you have been living under a rock.  This eclectic store is the go to for original, local, and cool gifts for anyone and everyone on your holiday list.  What’s even better is last year they started their Pop up Shop on Main Street in Carmel called Mass On Main.  At last, all you Northsiders have no excuse not to pop in and check out the charming baby gifts, Indiana inspired jewelry, and handcrafted ornaments (just to name a few).  Stop by either location to find a unique gift that your loved ones are sure to adore.

Ambre Blends, in case we haven’t talked your ear off about them already, is an Indianapolis company owned and operated by women.  Their scents and products are cruelty free, 100% natural, and smell amazing.  Their signature scent Ambre is their most popular but the beauty of their oils is they are meant to be layered to create your own signature scent.  Oh, and did I mention they smell different on everyone based on your body’s chemistry? Yeah.  Genius.  In addition to their oils they carry natural deodorants, body creams, room sprays, and so much more.  We carry Ambre at both the Carmel and our Fishers location.  The 10ml roller ball makes for the perfect stocking stuffer!

The other part of supporting local businesses is eating locally grown foods and beverages.  When I asked our staff to give me some of their favorite locally owned places to eat and shop there was one place we ALL agreed upon, Local Eatery & Pub.  Located in Westfield off of 146th Street this gem is the answer to delicious tasting food that is socially responsible.  Yes their Tater Tots (try them Cajun style) will change your life but they offer much more.  With a seasonally rotating menu of Farm-to-Table American cuisine you are sure to find something that delights even the pickiest eater.  Everything on their menu is truly swoon worthy.  Some of their farmers and producers include Local Folks Foods, Homestead Growers, Fair Oaks Farms, and Sun King Brewing Company.  Pop by on a chilly afternoon for a family friendly lunch or take your date for a pint and a delicious burger.  The Local is truly suited to your every need.

We hope this gives you some great ideas on where to shop & eat locally this season!  Sadly I could not fit a little blurb about all our favorite places to shop and eat locally in Indy.  So here are our some honorable mentions:

The Pint Room in Carmel
Dottie Couture Boutique in Indianapolis
Locally Grown Gardens in Indianapolis
The Legend in Irvington
Homespun in Indianapolis
